Scripture:

James 1:19-20 – So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

Being swift to hear means that you should be ready to hear the word of God, as well as all godly counsel and correction. To be slow to speak instructs you in being guarded in all your conversations. It has been wisely noticed that “Nature has given to man one tongue, but two ears, that we may hear from others twice as much as we speak.” Solomon said in Proverbs 13:3, “He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction”

Challenge:

This verse does not suggest that you should not speak, but that you should be slow to speak. Do you respond, at times, without thinking before hand or without stepping back and considering how you should respond? Have you ever regretting what you said to someone because you spoke too soon? If so, then your challenge this week is to resist the temptation to speak too quickly and to take time to consider how God would have you to respond in your everyday situations. Seek the help of the Holy Spirit to assist you in hearing twice as much as you speak. As we learned this past Sunday, “A soft answer turns away wrath…” Proverbs 15:1a, may you seek in every way God’s perfect answer.

Have a godly week,
Pastor Rob

Scripture:

Galatians 1:10 – For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

Paul is basically saying here that if his main concern was to please others more than to please God, then he would not be a true servant of the Lord. You cannot please the desires of ungodly people without the disapproval of God. People today want to create their own truths so that they can satisfy their own pleasures and not have to be accountable for their actions. Those who serve the Lord are seekers of God’s truths and followers of those truths.

Challenge:

You want to please God, you want to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. Pleasing others is a losing battle that no one can win in the long run. But, pleasing the Lord is accomplished by obeying His word and listening to His guidence given by the Holy Spirit. Your challenge this week is to not be a people pleaser and be a God pleaser. Do not compromise what you know is right in order to ‘fit in’ with others. God was well pleased with His beloved Son because Jesus always obeyed His Fathers wishes. You too are a beloved child of God, when you are in total obedience to your Heavenly Father. God bless you.

Have a godly week,

Scripture:

1 Peter 1:15–16 – But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

God would not call you to holiness if it were impossible for you to be holy. You cannot be holy in and of yourself, but with the Lord’s help you can be made holy. Peter reaches back into the Old Testament, in verse 16, for proof that God expects His people to be like Himself. In Leviticus 11:44, the Lord said: “Be holy, for I am holy.” You are empowered to live a holy life by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Challenge:

Instead of imitating the ungodly world with its fads and fashions, your life should reproduce the holy character of the One who saved you and set you apart from the world. This weeks challenge for you is to focus on your behavior and attitude to be godly and holy. Fight your natural temptation to respond to things the way the world does and ask yourself how God would want you to respond. With the Lord’s help you will see your character be more in line with God’s character. God bless you.

Scripture:

3 John 2-4 – Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

The apostle John had no greater joy than to hear that his friends were growing in the truth of God’s word. It is a great thing to hear of someone who gets saved and places their life and trust in the Lord’s hands. But the very next thing is to pray that person continues in the faith and grows in the ways of the Lord Jesus Christ. What good is it if someone surrenders today only to go back to their old ways tomorrow. Christian faith is a constant process of stripping away the ways of the world and putting on the things of godliness and holy living.

Challenge:

Are you growing stronger in the understanding of God’s holy word? Are you making determined efforts to transform your mind to think more godly and less fleshly? If you have accepted Jesus as your Savior, that is wonderful news! Now you must be committed to adding to your faith moral excellence. (read 2 Peter 1:5–8) Your challenge this week is to make a list of things you would like to see changed in your life. Then pray over the list and ask God to help you, one by one, work on making those changes so you will live a life that honors God and honors His word.

Have a godly week,
Pastor Rob

Scripture:

Philippians 3:14 - I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

“I press!” carries the idea of an intense endeavor. The Greeks used it to describe a hunter eagerly pursuing his prey. No one becomes a winner by listening to lectures, watching movies, reading books, or cheering at the games. You become a winner by getting into the game and determining to win! There are two extremes to avoid: (1) “I must do it all” and (2) “God must do it all!” both are heading for failure. The Christian with the spiritual mind realizes that God must work in you if you are going to win. “Without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). God first must work in you so that He might work through you.

Challenge:

We all get bogged down by the struggles that are always before us. Not this week! The challenge I have for you this week is to set your mind on crossing the finish line every day. Failure is not an option for you this week. No matter what happens, you are going to rise above your circumstances and see the victory God has for you. Pressing toward the goal means not looking back and not looking around, but focusing on the finish line. When you begin to feel weak, remind yourself that you are going to press through and receive the prize that God has called you to. God bless you.

Have a godly week,
Pastor Rob
